William Agace is a Professor at the Leo Foundation Skin Immunology Center, Copenhagen University, Denmark and the Immunology Section, Lund University, Sweden and currently director of the Novo Nordisk Foundation funded Center for Intestinal Immune Regulation (CIIR). He received his Ph.D from Lund University in 1996 and after 3-years of postdoctoral studies at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, returned to Lund in 1999 to establish an independent research group in the field of mucosal immunology. His group combines the use of state-of-the-art transgenic mouse models with detailed analysis of human intestinal immune compartments to assess diverse aspects of the gut immune system in health and disease. Major current focuses include assessing mechanisms of lymphocyte differentiation and trafficking, as well as intestinal dendritic cell and fibroblast diversity and function. He has served as President of the Society of Mucosal Immunology (SMI), as 1 of 3 editor-in-chiefs for SMI’s associated journal Mucosal Immunology and organized several international conferences in the field. In 2019 he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (class for medical sciences).
